Before 1803, Louisiana’s first militia units existed under Spanish and French colonial governments. Many were retained after the Louisiana Purchase and saw combat defending New Orleans from British attack during the War of 1812 (1812-1814).

During the Mexican War (1846-1848), two batteries of New Orleans artillery and other Louisiana militia units served with the Army in the Mexico City campaign.

In the Civil War (1861-1865), Louisiana furnished 65,000 men to the Confederate armies. Some served with the Army of Northern Virginia, while others served in Louisiana trying to prevent Union seizure of New Orleans.

Two Louisiana infantry regiments served in the Spanish-American War (1898-1899), performing garrison duties in Havana following the armistice.

During the Mexican border crisis of 1916, four state units served in different areas of Texas.

In WWI (1917-1918), most Louisiana Guard units were assigned to the 39th Division, which arrived in France too late to see combat. However, Louisiana’s 114th Engineer Regiment did fight in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.

After the war, most of the Louisiana Guard was assigned to the 31st ID and saw combat in the Pacific Theater during WWI (1941-1945). Other elements, such as its 156th Infantry, fought in Europe.

Louisiana had one unit mobilized, but not deployed, during the Korean War. A total of 17 state units were mobilized during Desert Storm (1990-1991), nine serving in theater.

During the Guard’s increased role in Iraq in 2004, Louisiana contributed all three battalions of the 156th Infantry and the 1st Battalion, 141st Field Artillery among its deployed units.
